The annual Christmas Dinner was held on Dec. 2 in the UAC (United Arts Club) Dining Room. Mary Pavlides, Hon. Sec. of the UAC was a special guest at the event. The highlight was the presentation of prizes for the Summer Tournament which was run in three graded divisions. The winners receiving their trophy and prize are shown below. These were:
- Club Championship (Senior Div.); Jonathan O'Connor - Intermediate Div; Darren McLean - Junior Division; Eamonn Cummins The Club's 2023 AGM was held on Nov. 13 at which a new committee was elected. Eddie O'Connor stepped down as President and is replaced by former Hon. Sec. Rory Broderick. Malachy Hevehan was elected to serve as the new Hon. Sec. Ronan Nolan was re-elected to the Hon. Treasurer role. Daniel Martinez Otero and Vihanga Gamage were also re-elected to the committee and are joined there by new committee member Darren McLean.
Chess lessons are offered again for those interested in improving at this game. The course will be run by club member Daniel Martinez Otero who is a highly rated player and experienced chess instructor. These lessons are for players of 18 years or older who know the basic rules of chess. It is recommended for unrated players and those with a rating below 1500. Venue: The venue is Dublin Chess Club (United Arts Club at 3, Upper Fitzwilliam St., Dublin 2). Our room (Room No. 9) is located on the top floor of the building. Structure: 13 lessons of 2 hours each on the following dates: This timetable is not definitive as some changes may be done due to working issues of the instructor. If you are not able to attend some of the lessons, the materials will be provided through email. More exercises of the topic covered in the lesson will be provided after each lesson together with the lesson materials. Price: The cost of attending the course is shown in the table below. This is equivalent to a very reasonable €8.1 per hour. An approximately 10% discount is available for Dublin Chess Club (DCC) or United Arts Club (UAC) members, even if you join the club at the start of the course. In an impressive performance he beat eleven, drew with two and lost to two - Ken Killian and Joe Durkan. The photo shows Jonathan on the right presenting a token prize to Ken. Joe had left earlier so his prize was consumed afterwards in the bar.
A social cum chess event was held on May 17 organised by committee member Malachy Hevehan. This provided an opportunity for new members to meet with the more established ones away from the chess board in the Arts Club bar. A drink and food bites were provided and Hon. Sec. Rory Broderick gave a brief talk about the Club's history and it's recent success in the Leinster League where both it's Ennis team (captained by Vihanga Gamage) and it's Bodley team (captained by Malachy Hevehan) gained promotion.
